Good morning, Lou. I don't have a good knowledge of Lake St. Joe. If someone said the ice-out there would be five or six days later than on Pelican Lake here in Sioux Lookout I would believe it.
I was told once that ice-out occurs one day later than here for every 17 miles north. I haven't made an effort to observe to see if it holds true, but as a rule of thumb I think, for those interested, it makes a good place to hang your hat. It would be only a general rule, for sure, as each lake has its own conditions (ice-out on Minnitaki Lake, SLIGHTLY south - and east - of Pelican, occurs a day or two later than Pelican, for instance).
I wish you safe travels and good fishing. As always, if you are passing through Sioux Lookout and have time for a quick coffee and a short visit, give me a call.

Hey Dick
Get website I am so addicted to ur web cam. I was watching the piles of snow on ur deck hoping they would melt fast...now focused on the barrel.
My group heads up every year to woodland caribou park. Pretty excited we fly on the 22nd, should be safe from ice but we need the thaw to continue.
If u predict ice out on the 10-12, What's ur prediction on the barrel?

Hi Dick. Thanks for the info. I have not heard that before. Last time I checked the 10 day out look that had low 60's for the end of this week. Looks like it has now changes to the low 40's. Are you still sticking to May 10-12 for ice out? Compared to last year, I think at this time we could see water in the video cam.

Good morning, Ryan. Because I originated the barrel sinking contest for our Rotary club I declare a conflict of interest in making any predictions in that regard. The contest is new this year, so I think we'll all learn something.
Open water (just enough to say so) began showing at the shoreline yesterday. My forecast shows high temperatures all week in the mid 40s.
Good wishes!

In any case, I went back and looked at the history for last year in comparison to this years (High temps). Last year at this time it was in the 60's (Pickle lake area). I wish I had taken some snapshots of the webcam last year to see just how far the water was showing at this point. Do you remember when ice out was last year?

Hi Lou, If you check my blog for last May 17 you can see me headed through the ice for our first trip to camp for the season. I don't remember the official ice-out date, but based on that I'd say probably May 18 or 19. I looked up some pictures I took of gulls on the shore just down from us last April 26. The ice then and now looks about the same.

Hi Dick, Thanks for the info. Hope it warms up soon. Predicted highs for the area changed over night increased. Not sure how much I trust the 10 day outlook.

We'll need some good warm temperatures and some brisk winds to make things happen now. There's not much of either in the forecast for the rest of the week after today.
